Our Design Team Assists with 3D Printed Tooling

Recently we were tasked with designing a tool for Boeing that was going to be part of a new project with 3D printed tooling. The use of LSAM (Large Scale Additive Manufacturing) is not yet mainstream but the technology is constantly improving. Our design team was up to the challenge to incorporate our tool design expertise for this new approach. Although the overall design process was similar to traditional tool design, we had to think about the differences in material for 3D printed plastic vs standard tooling materials.

As the article describes the process of LSAM, it is important to remember that in many of these applications, the 3D printed tooling is made to “near net shape” and is precision machined to the designed tolerance.
